Bangkok2007: Bharani & Doi Tung @ TCDC

Category: food, thailand

Earlier, I talk about the eye candy of TCDC that would probably left you in mesmerized state. To complete your sensory delights, you just need to step into Bharani restaurant which is just beside the entrance of TCDC.

Being my first visit, I wasn’t aware Bharani restaurant already have 60 years of history behind them. Lieutenant Aphai Isarabhakdi had opened Bharani restaurant since 1949. The restaurant become well known for their western dish with thai twists. From minute steaks and French-style bouillabaisse, sausages that mingled seamlessly with thai exotic flavors.

60 years later and now run by 3rd generation owner, they still proudly insist to follow their grandfather’s original recipes, whipping up delicious old-styled of home cooked meals. In fact, most (if not all) of their staples on offer were home-made.

The menu certainly looks tantalizing, I chose the oxtail stew that was served along with steamed Jasmine rice & slices of Ox tongue . (Did I remembered correctly? hmmm …)

The aroma was fabulous and the stew, delicious with distinctive flavors. As for the tongue, it’s incredibly tender & it actually tastes real good to me!

Having tried Ox tongue previously in 2 occassion, I have mixed feelings for them. First, with Sichuan Mala steamboat (SG) where they were served thinly sliced, their textures were pretty chewy but good nevertheless; Second try was at Macau Restaurant in HK, thick succulent slices of OX tongue was served instead. This proves to be less appetizing as it’s really too fibrous & tough to chew. I immediately fell into dislike with tongue after that.

However, having tasted Bharani’s version, I’ve to profess that I’m loving it once again. Yes, I will certainly be back again if I’m ever in Bangkok.

Following my satisfying meal, I proceed to have caffeine fixes. Fortunately, Doi Tung Coffee was just besides Bharani. Doi Tung is a local brand with their organically grown Arabica coffee at Highland of Doi Tung. Situated somewhere in Northern Thailand, a Royal initiated project has successfully helped the hill tribes folks to move from their previous opium trade to coffee plantation.

Being a coffee lover, I certainly find their coffee really good & robust. Besides have a great cuppa, you are also supporting an alternative sustainable living for the local hill tribes. Coffee beans & powder are also available at the Doi Tung Cafe.
