Tropical fruits (updated)

Category: food, home

Between months of Aug ~ Oct, we starts to have these tasty fruits that grows in cluster ontree. While they belongs to same family (Meliaceae), they do differs slightly tastewise as well as in shape & sizes. The photo shows 2 types, so which is which?
1)Langsat 2) Duku-Langsat 3) Duku 4) Long Kong

ANSWER:
We have Duku-Langsat on the left & Long Kong on the right.

While the fruits may vary in size, generally Long Kong (Left) looks bigger, perhaps little more like “fig-shape”. Duku-Langsat (Right) were smaller & rounder

Long Kong (Front) were juicier & sweeter, almost seedless. Duku-Langsat (Rear) ranges from sweet to sweet-sour, slightly less juicy with greenish bitter seeds. On the whole, I would have prefer Long Kong, unfortunately, at $4/kg, they cost twice as expensive as Duku & Duku-Langsat @ $2/kg.

I’m sorry that I did not have any photo of Duku. It seems fewer in quantities this year. Nevertheless, they are about the same as Duku-Langsat except that their skin were thicker but flesh sweeter. Pricewise, they are similiar to Duku-Langsat as well too.

As for Langsat, I can’t seems to find them again. But here is the Langsat tree at Singapore Botanical Gardens. Hope that quenched your curiousity (if any).

I’m actually touched by a reader concern that I’m having too much heaty fruits. Durian & these dukus, long kong are considered heaty. Rest assured, being Libran, we always like to be in equilibrium be it in life or in food/fruits. There are numerous cooling fruits, watermelon being one of them. And to my delight, I found a cute mini-watermelon that goes for only $0.60 Compare its size with my mobile, isn’t it smaller then usual hehehe ….

These variant is called “Dark beauty” probably becoz of their dark green outer skin.

Sliced it any way you like. While this is only midly sweet, they taste refreshing & certainly thirsty quenching on a hot day.

With that life is finally back to equilibrium again :)
Have a wonderful weekend!!!
