Drifting Demo @ Singapore

Category: photo, home

When I heard there will be car drifting demo featuring D1 specs drift car in the weekend local race, I thought that will be a good chance to practice my photographic skills again. Hence I didn’t go to forest for some peace & quiet, instead I ended at our National Stadium Car Park.

While Singapore do not have a proper racing circuit, our local motorsports club still manage to organize (sometimes interesting) races for local enthusiasts. They are usually held in National Stadium carpark, sometimes at Malaysia, Johore Pasir Gudang race track.

Of coz if the races are held in car park, they can only be judged by time attack race. Meaning, who ever completes the circuit in proper sequence within the shortest time.

While doing racing in car parks seems like “NOT TOO FUN” as well as professional, it isn’t any easier. In fact, having tight spaces means there is little leeway for error. And most of the time, driver & car handling skills plays a more important role than the raw power of the car.

While I was there, in fact, there were 3 motorsports events going on, Time attack Rally races, Motorcycles & Scooter races as well as tthe Dritfing demo, which is what I’m really looking forward.

There are 3 cars used for the demo. 2 X D1 GP specs Nissan Silvia S15 & 1 Subaru WRX STi (Red).

Red S15 from Team Malaysia (Yes, there is D1 GP race series in Malaysia as well)

Red S15 Interior. Very nicely done, I must say.

White S15 from Team Japan

White S15 Interior - Looks a little more stock but don’t let the looks fool you. This car performed extremely well.

I had a rare opportunity to peek at the engine bay of this powerful white S15.

The drifting done using 4WD (Wheel Drive) WRX was really weird but it shows potential. Probably with better setup & driver skills, it could possibly be better. I heard there is a special modified WRX with RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) in town, not too sure if that’s WRX that I’m seeing. Arghh … I should have asked the owner about that. Anyway, I shall only focus on the D1 cars, as we rarely have opportunities to get real close to them.

The smallish drifting demo circuit cum car park (during normal time) hahaha …

Aftermath of extreme rubber burning!

And finally, graciously bowing to audiences, thanking them for viewing the demo. Although I certainly enjoyed their demo, it’s certainly not the most environmentally friendly way to enjoy my week, oh well! hehehehe ….

Photography Notes:

As the cars were not going at a very fast speed (as compared when in racing circuits), it’s not too difficult to do panning. However, getting background blurring becomes more challenging now (due to slower drift speeds). Using mostly aperture priority doesn’t seems to correct method here, perhaps I should experiment with shutter priority next time
