Durian 2006

Category: food, home

Between July ~ August, we have probably one of the most anticipated season of the year. No, we aren’t talking about the four seasons, being in the tropics, we’ve only got the very hot, hot&wet, wet & “when the rain gonna stop” season.

We are talking about fruits with shapes ranging from round to oval & covered with “killer”prickly thorns. As lethal as the thorns were, the pungently aromatic flesh would probably sent anyone to either heaven & hell, depending on who & where they come from. :)

I actually have wild thoughts of flying in Penang & visit their various well-known durian plantations. Unfortunately, I got the reply from them that there won’t be any durian by end of July. Which is interesting as I heard another conflicting information from another sources that were more good durians (probably from Segamat, another part of malaysia) will arriving to our shores in August. Hmmm … well, doesn’t matter anyway, good durians are always readily available during the season in Singapore.

No worries ….. so the trip was cancelled & one fine day, I bought some to cure my silly craving. I tried to choose a few from different species based on the exterior look for taste test. I’m certainly not durian expert so I won’t make any attempt to identify the different durian species. Oh, if you know, please do let me know. Thanks!

Starting from the left in clockwise direction. This is the biggest in my lot. Orangy flesh with good aroma, the textures were creamy with more sweetness then bitterness.

This next one looks smallest of the lot, but looks are deceiving. Not only the husk are thinner, its plump flesh comes with small seed. Pale color with moist & creamy textures, taste of good bitterness with hints of sweetness.

The last one look promising for its unique shape. Medium size with thick husk, the number of fleshy seed looks so disappointing when opened. While the color & textures is between the other 2, the bitter taste is much better with some interesting aftertaste.

While it’s best to consume the durian upon opening, I usually stored unfinished ones in the fridge sealed with air-tight container. But it’s best consume with a day or two as its quality beginning to deteriorate even after a day.

And of course, I’m not stopping at these yet as long as there are durians around. :D
